Housed in San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts, the Exploratorium was founded in 1969 by famous physicist Dr. Frank Oppenheimer. It has over 650 science, art, and human perception exhibits. At the museum, you can touch a tornado, stick your shadow to a wall, paint with light, and experiment with illusions.

Did you know?

  • Dr. Frank Oppenheimer worked on the Manhattan Project, the international project to create the first atomic bomb during World War II.
  • Dr. Oppenheimer was the younger brother of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the first director of Los Alamos National Laboratory. This facility in New Mexico was used for top-secret testing during the Manhattan Project.
